IBS Conferences

From Incheon International Airport (ICN)

There are two main ways from Incheon Int'l Airport to the Institute for Basic Science (IBS): a direct Airport Limousine bus to Daejeon, and an Airport Limousine bus or subway (AREX) with bullet train (KTX) transfer at Seoul Station. The third option; a direct KTX route to Daejeon Station, was suspended in March 2018 and officially closed in September 2018 due to low ridership. The most convenient way to get from Incheon Airport to IBS HQ in Daejeon is to use a direct airport limousine bus to Daejeon, and we strongly recommend this method.

Terminal 2 at Incheon Airport opened January 18, 2018 and bus and rail methods mentioned above are available at both Terminal 1 and Terminal 2. As of this writing, Korean Air, Delta Air Lines, Air France, and KLM Royal Dutch Airlines depart from Terminal 2 but this is expected to expand in the future. Before arriving in Korea, knowing which terminal you will arrive in isn't necessary, but when you leave Korea it will be important as transportation between the two terminals is not very convenient. When your plane lands at Incheon Airport, just take note of which terminal you arrive at, as that will be the terminal you depart from.

If you need to get from one terminal to the other, you can take a free airport shuttle bus. Boarding is on the 3rd floor and located near Exit 8 in Terminal 1, and in between Exit 4 and 5 in Terminal 2. Shuttles come every 5 to 8 minutes, stop by the Hyatt Hotel in route from Terminal 2 to Terminal 1, stop by the Incheon Airport Fire Station in route from Terminal 1 to Terminal 2, and take approximately 20 minutes. Some but not all of the buses are low-floor buses which make them easier to board, but there is limited space for suitcases and travelers are expected to move their own bags. The Airport Railroad Express (AREX) also goes between terminals but is not free and the boarding location is located farther than the shuttle buses. More information on the AREX system is below. There is a maglev system, named the Incheon Airport Maglev, which will be an island-wide maglev in the future. Phase 1 of construction is complete and phases 2 and 3 are planned. Phase 1 does not go between terminals but transfer might be possible in the future when phase 2 opens. As of this writing, it is too early to say if and when a transfer to Terminal 2 will be provided.

Method 1 Incheon International Airport → Airport Limousine Bus to Daejeon → IBS HQ

Airport Limousine buses for Daejeon cost KRW 23,100 or KRW 27,700 for late night (early morning) hours. Tickets are difficult to purchase online or via smartphone as the process requires the Korean language and several different bus companies cover this route. Buy tickets for "Daejeon" and confirm tickets do not say "Daejeon S.W." as the route is slightly different. Travel time will take about 180 ~ 200 minutes. There is no bathroom on buses but you will get one 20-minute rest stop visit near the destination; both Daejeon bound and airport bound. If you need to use a bathroom before the scheduled rest stop, please show the following message to the driver asking him to stop at the nearest rest stop. Please note that it might be 10 or 20 minutes until the next rest stop as they are not very frequent. 죄송합니다. 화장실이 급한데 다음 휴게소에서 내려주세요. If you cannot wait upwards of 20 minutes, the driver might be able to stop at a smaller area to the side of the road within a few minutes. If you cannot wait, please show this message to the driver. 죄송합니다. 화장실이 급한데 내릴 수 있는 가장 가까운곳에서 세워주세요.

Once in Daejeon, get off at Doryong or Daejeon Government Complex (pronounced Jeongbu Chongsa) and take a taxi to IBS. Note: The Government Complex Bus Terminal has several locations and Daejeon bound buses and airport bound buses are at different locations. Please see the Daejeon City map further down to avoid confusion when you conclude your trip and return to the airport. Although Doryong is slightly closer to IBS, there are not many taxis available. Regardless of the bus stop you exit at, once in a taxi the distance is roughly 2~3 km, will last around 5 minutes, and will cost around KRW 3,000. The drivers covering this Daejeon route try to save time where possible. Some drivers will ask where you will exit the bus in Daejeon and require passengers to group their luggage under the bus by destination. Other drivers will only ask your destination as you enter the bus. And yet other drivers will ask (only in Korean) while they are driving if passengers wish to exit at the next stop and will skip stops if no one replies. If you do not understand the driver’s announcement, your stop may be skipped and drivers are not allowed to stop at locations between official stops. To save yourself some grief, we included a map, pictures, and the names of each bus stop in English and Korean further down this page. Regardless of the driver, when you are getting on the bus we suggest you visually show the driver the stop you wish to exit at.

Welcome to Daejeon. You’re almost at IBS. As the airport bus stops are confusing even for Daejeon citizens, we made this map to help you get to IBS, and then get back to Incheon Airport after your visit. The map should help you find your bearings, and the Korean names are written below in the key in case you get lost. Simply get someone’s attention, and point to the wording in Korean to get assistance.

The Daejeon Government Building (sometimes written as "Complex") has multiple bus terminals (intercity to the west, intercity drop off to the south, and express to the east). To go to Incheon Airport, go to this terminal just west of the government complex. Dunsan is the name of the area so you’ll see this written above the terminal. Tickets bound for airports cannot be purchased from the kiosks; they must be purchased at the counter.

Buses used to stop across the street from ⓒ but the sheer number of buses stopping created traffic issues and they relocated the bus stop here. Other than a very small sign, there is no written signage and this bus stop doesn't appear on many maps. Don't let that stop you as many people get off buses here; so many that there is always a queue of taxis waiting to pick up passengers.

Method 2 Incheon International Airport → Airport Limousine bus or AREX train to Seoul Station → Train to Daejeon Station → IBS HQ
Incheon Int'l Airport → Seoul Station
  • Airport limousine busThe second option is to go to Seoul Station via bus or subway and then transfer to Daejeon. This route is less direct and takes longer, but works well if you want to stopover at Seoul on your way to Daejeon. To go from Incheon Airport to Seoul Station, you can take bus 6001 or 6702. A number of other buses bound for various parts of Seoul are available, but in this tutorial we will focus on getting to Seoul Station. Bus 6001 is a little more frequent, costs 15,000 KRW, the first bus leaves at 5:30 AM from both terminals, and the last bus leaves at 23:05 from Terminal 1 and 22:45 from Terminal 2. Bus 6702 comes frequently, costs 16,000 KRW, the first bus leaves at 4:58 AM from Terminal 1 and 5:18 from Terminal 2, and the last bus leaves at 22:55 from Terminal 1 and 23:15 from Terminal 2.

If you are in Terminal 1, bus 6001 is accessible through Exit 5 and is located at bus stop 5. Bus 6702 is located at bus stop 3.
If you are in Terminal 2, bus 6001 is located at bus stop 29, and bus 6702 is located at bus stop 18.
  • SubwayIf you prefer to take the subway, please take an AREX (Airport Railroad Express) train at Incheon International Airport Station across the street from Terminal 1. All stop AREX trains are to the east (your left) and non-stop express AREX trains are to the west (your right). Non-stop trains take 43 minutes, cost KRW 14,800 but frequently is discounted to KRW 8,000, leave roughly every 30 minutes, have seats like traditional trains, and will take you directly to Seoul Station. All stop trains take 57 minutes, cost KRW 4,650 including a refundable KRW 500 for a single journey ticket, leave roughly every 7 minutes, have seats like traditional subways, and ride until the last stop (Seoul Station). First train leaves at 5:20 AM and last train leaves at 11:40 PM. Timetables and updated information are available at www.arex.or.kr

If you are in Terminal 2, you’ll take an escalator into the basement, go the middle of the transport area and purchase a ticket for a train. The AREX information center is located behind a pillar and usually has several staff on hand. After purchasing your ticket, you’ll enter the paid area and take an escalator down another floor to board your train.

Seoul Station → Daejeon Station
  • Bullet trainIf you took the airport limousine bus, then make your way from the street up into Seoul Station. If you took the AREX, then follow the crowds up 1 small escalator, 1 long escalator, scan your transit card, if you have a single journey ticket then refund it in the separate refund machine, 2 more escalators, and now you are in the center of Seoul Station. Tickets for the KTX bullet trains can be purchased by tellers at ticketing counters, by machine, or online at http://www.letskorail.com/ebizbf/EbizBfTicketSearch.do Online orders must be claimed in person at a ticketing counter with your passport as identification before you ride the train. If you order your ticket via the English website but do not claim the ticket in person, your reservation is seen as unfulfilled and your seat could be resold to another customer. For train times please see the website link.

The ticketing counter closest to the AREX entrance is smaller and typically has a smaller line than the ticketing counter close to the main street entrance. Ticketing machines are located in between the two sets of counters and are closer to the street entrance than the AREX entrance.

KTX standard seats cost KRW 24,000 and first class seats costs KRW 35,000 and are sometimes discounted. Travel time is roughly one hour depending on the number of stops in route. Tickets do occasionally sell out but trains run every 10 to 20 minutes. Please see the website above for current timetables. Train types other than KTX exist but take two hours to travel to Daejeon and do not run as often.

  • Taxi We strongly recommend that you take a taxi to get to IBS upon your arrival at Daejeon Station. Once arriving at Daejeon Station, go out the front entrance (Exit 1) and get a taxi from the line of taxis waiting near the entrance. The distance is 8 km, driving time is 18 minutes, and the fare is around KRW 8,000.
  • Subway and taxi Go out the front of the train-based Daejeon Station aboveground building and go underground into the subway-based Daejeon Station. Go down the escalator, make several lefts, go down another escalator, and use your transit card (T-money or Cashbee) or purchase a single use token. Walk 15 steps, turn left, go down the escalator, and go to the platform on your left. Trains come every 10 minutes or so. In fifteen minutes you’ll travel eight stations, exit at Government Complex, Daejeon Station (정부청사 pronounced Jeongbu Chongsa), and go out Exit 3 or 4 and hop into a taxi. The ride is about 7 minutes, which will cost around 3,000 KRW. However, it is currently not possible to turn left from the main east-west road directly into the IBS entrance. Drivers will either need to go near the Daejeon Convention Center and then do a U-turn, or turn right past Studio Cube and then approach IBS from the West gate.

To avoid any potential confusion with a taxi driver, we recommend you say “hello” in Korean when entering the taxi (Ann-young-ha-say-oh) and then show them this note in Korean stating you wish to visit IBS.

  • Bus Although time-consuming, it is possible to reach IBS by bus. Depending on traffic, the bus ride will take more than 1 hour and cost KRW 1,250 with T-money or Cashbee transit card or KRW 1,400 with cash. Once arriving at Daejeon Station, go out the front entrance (Exit 1) and walk until you reach the street. Turn right and walk another 60 meters until you reach a bus top. Ride bus 606 or 705 and exit the bus at Expo Science Park (606) or Expo Art Hall (705) as the buses have different routes after crossing the river. Regardless of the bus, exit as soon as you go over the bridge and be prepared for a walk.
