Scholars Around the World Gather to Discuss Future Research Utilizing RAON- IBS Institute for Rare Isotope Science Forms Program Advisory Committee (PAC) Composed of Scholars From Various Countries - - First Research Topics to be Selected through Domestic Experiment Proposal Review on March 6-7 - Scholars from around the world gather in Daejeon to select the first research experiments utilizing RAON. The Institute for Rare Isotope Science (IRIS)1), which is under the Institute for Basic Science (IBS) has formed a Program Advisory Committee (PAC) with distinguished scholars from around the world. They announced that the first meeting of the committee will be held on March 6-7 at the new research center in Sindong, Daejeon, to select the first research topics utilizing the RAON Rare Isotope Accelerator. IRIS has assembled a Program Advisory Committee consisting of six prominent scholars from leading research institutions worldwide, including Chairman Nigel ORR from the French National Institute of Nuclear and Particle Physics (IN2P3-CNRS)2) and researchers from the ISOLDE3) facility at the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN), the RIKEN Nishina Center4) in Japan, and the GSI Helmholtz Center for Heavy Ion Research in Germany. They will convene the first meeting in Daejeon on March 6 to review and evaluate the technical proposals submitted for this year's inaugural research at RAON./p> The submissions for review include 30 experiment proposals received from domestic researchers, including Director HAHN Insik of the Center for Exotic Nuclear Studies, following a call for proposals targeting Korean researchers in December of last year. These proposals cover various fields, including nuclear physics (22), biomedical sciences (4), agricultural science (1), semiconductor (1), and materials science (2). Based on the Program Advisory Committee's evaluation, IRIS plans to prioritize these experiment proposals and decide which ones will be carried out in the forthcoming experiments utilizing the neon (Ne) and argon (Ar) beam-based KoBRA5) spectroscopy device from May to August and the ISOL rare isotope beam-based collinear laser spectroscopy (CLS)6) device from October onwards. Managing Director HONG Seung-Woo of IRIS, stated, "We viewed this year's first research utilizing RAON as a preparatory stage for embarking on full-fledged research with researchers worldwide, and we were pleasantly surprised by the abundance of excellent experiment proposals." He added, "I am delighted that we can showcase our experiment proposals to distinguished scholars such as Chairman Nigel ORR." Chairman Nigel ORR commented, "I am delighted to contribute to the launch of RAON's research, which will be a cornerstone of rare isotope science worldwide. I hope to be part of RAON's complete success, not only in the upcoming utilization research but also in future high-energy experimental facilities."
