With the establishment of the basic plan for the second phase of construction of the Institute for Basic Science (IBS), the second headquarters building and campus research facilities are set to be gradually constructed by 2030.

The IBS construction project aims to establish the headquarters and campus research facilities for securing global competitiveness in basic research and building essential research infrastructure. A total budget of 633.5 billion KRW is being allocated for the construction of research facilities on the headquarters and five campuses, comprising a total of 40 research centers.

In the first phase of construction, the first headquarters building was completed in December 2017, and at the end of last year, IBS campus buildings were constructed at KAIST and POSTECH, where IBS campus research centers are located. A total of 18 research centers have moved into the newly established research facilities and are actively conducting research activities.

The newly established basic plan involves an investment of 309 billion KRW to build the second headquarters and new campus research buildings. The second headquarters commenced construction in May of this year, with completion targeted for 2025. The design phase for the UNIST campus research building is currently underway. The construction of campus research buildings at GIST, DGIST, and KAIST (2nd phase) is planned to be completed gradually by 2030, depending on the selection and operation status of research centers.
