Director OH Yong-Geun of the IBS Center for Geometry and Physics (CGP) was honored with the 2019 Korea Science Award. The award ceremony was held on December 12, 2019 at the Gwacheon National Science Museum.

Director OH studied mathematics at Seoul National University and earned his Ph.D. in mathematics from UC Berkeley in 1983. The globally renowned geometrician has been serving as the IBS CGP director since 2012.

The Ministry of Science and ICT, which presents the award jointly with the National Research Foundation, said the director was selected in recognition of his contribution to establishing the Floer theory as a prime research tool in the field of symplectic topology. OH is one of the leading researchers in symplectic geometry and mirror symmetry which lie at the heart of mathematics and physics.

Director OH is the fourth IBS winner of the award. Previous laureates are Director CHANG Sukbok of the Center for Catalytic Hydrocarbon Functionalizations, Director YEOM Han Woong of the Center for Artificial Low Dimensional Electronic Systems and Associate Director PARK Je-Geun of the Center for Correlated Electron Systems in 2013, 2015 and 2016, respectively.
