KIM Jae Kyoung, Chief Investigator (CI) of the IBS Biomedical Mathematics Group, and SHIM Shi Bo, Head of the IBS Division of Planning and External Affairs, were honored by the Korea Science Journalists Association at the 2025 Science Journalism Awards. Kim received the “Scientist of the Year Selected by Journalists” award, while Shim received the “Science Communicator Award.”

The Science Journalism Awards recognize journalists, scientists, and contributors to science communication who have enhanced public understanding of science through the media and fostered broader social engagement with scientific issues. The award aims to promote excellence in science journalism and support the development of national science and technology.

Kim, recipient of the “Scientist of the Year Selected by Journalists”, has been a leading figure in quantitatively elucidating complex biological systems using mathematical models, contributing significantly to the growth of interdisciplinary research between life sciences and mathematical sciences. Through numerous media appearances and public lectures, he has also worked to improve public understanding of mathematics.

Kim remarked, “It is a great honor to receive such a meaningful award. This achievement was possible thanks to the students and colleagues who have pursued the belief that mathematics can become a language for life sciences and medicine, and to all those who helped connect our research to the public.”

Shim, recipient of the “Science Communicator Award”, has worked to accurately and effectively deliver IBS research achievements to the public through proactive communication and collaboration with science media.

Shim stated, “We have broadened our communication channels through various efforts to bring basic science to general public. This was made possible thanks to the support of IBS researchers, the PR team, and science journalists. I will continue working to ensure that science can be delivered using a more accessible language to our society.”

Meanwhile, this year’s awards ceremony was held on November 25 at the Lotte Hotel in Jung-gu, Seoul, during the “2025 Science Journalism Night” event.
