KAANG Bong-Kiun, Director of the Center for Cognition and Sociality within the Institute for Basic Science (IBS), has been elected as a new member of the National Academy of Sciences, Republic of Korea (NAS).

At its general meeting on July 11, the NAS announced the election of eight new members, including Director Kaang; KIM Kimoon, Emeritus Professor at POSTECH and former Director of the IBS Center for Self-assembly and Complexity; and YOO Hoi-Jun, Professor at the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST).

The NAS selects its members by receiving multiple nominations of outstanding researchers from academic societies in each discipline, followed by review by the Membership Review Committee and the Board of Directors, with final approval at the General Assembly.

Limited to 150 members (75 in the Humanities and Social Sciences Division and 75 in the Natural Sciences Division), NAS members are appointed for life under the National Academy of Sciences Act and are eligible for various forms of state support for their academic research.

The certificate award ceremony for the new members will be held on July 18 at the NAS headquarters in Seocho-gu, Seoul.
