IBS Researchers Ranked Among the 2022 List of Highly Cited Researchers

Eight researchers from the Institute for Basic Science (IBS) were included in this year's list of the world’s most influential highly cited researchers (HCR).

Clarivate Analytics is the world’s leading information analytics company that provides analysis of bibliometric and scientometric data across 22 different research fields in academia. Clarivate designates the papers that have the top 1 percentile number of citations over the past 10 years as highly cited papers (HCP). Likewise, researchers who have published a large number of such HCPs and thus have had a significant impact on their fellow researchers are selected as HCRs. This year, a total of 6,938 researchers from 69 countries around the world were selected as HCRs.

Director HYEON Taeghwan (Center for Nanoparticle Research) and Director Rodney RUOFF (Center for Multidimensional Carbon Materials) were listed on the HCR list for 9 consecutive years (2014-2022). The two directors have been selected every year since Clarivate started publishing its list in 2014. In particular, Director Hyeon was listed as an HCR in the two fields of Chemistry and Material Science. He was among the 219 researchers worldwide who were selected in multiple fields this year.

In addition, Director CHANG Suk-Bok (Center for Catalytic Hydrocarbon FunctionalizationsㆍChemistry) has been listed for 8 consecutive years (2015-2022), while Director LEE Young-Hee (Center for Integrated Nanostructure PhysicsㆍCross-Field), Director Axel TIMMERMANN (Center for Climate PhysicsㆍEnvironment and Ecology), Associate Director KIM Dae-Hyeong (Center for Nanoparticle ResearchㆍMaterial science), and Research Fellow KANG Kisuk (Center for Nanoparticle ResearchㆍCross-Field) have been selected as HCRs for 5 consecutive years. In addition, Associate Director KOO Bon-Kyoung (Center for Genome EngineeringㆍCross-Field) was selected as an HCR for the first time this year. So far, a total of 13 IBS-affiliated researchers have been selected as HCR across 7 research fields.

President NOH Do-young of the IBS, said, "The biggest accomplishment of IBS over the past 11 years is the formation of research groups composed of the best scientists from within and outside of South Korea," adding, ”The steady production of HCRs who are recognized by their peers is the testament of its achievements.”

Meanwhile, among the papers produced by IBS over the past 10 years, the ratio of the top 1% HCP is 3.32%, which is the highest among South Korean universities and research institutes. The HCP ratio is a representative indicator of the quality level of the research output of an institute. By this metric, IBS excels even when compared to other major basic science research institutes around the world, as it is ahead of the Max Planck Society (MPG) (2.49%), the RIKEN (1.97%), and the Chinese Academy of Sciences (1.71%).
