Dr. KWON Myeun, Research Advisor of the Korea Superconducting Tokamak Advanced Research (KSTAR) of the National Fusion Research Institute (NFRI) was appointed as Director of the IBS Rare Isotope Science Project.

Dr. Kwon graduated from the Nuclear Engineering Department of Seoul National University, received a Ph.D. in nuclear fusion from Georgia Tech, and worked as a postdoc researcher at the University of Texas and the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education. After returning to Korea, he worked as Senior Researcher at the Pohang Accelerator Laboratory (PAL) and as the Director of the KSTAR Operation Project at the NFRI. From 2011 to 2014, he served as the Director of the NFRI and is currently conducting advisory activities.

Dr. Kwon is regarded as a large-scale scientific facility expert who has participated in projects related to the Pohang Light Source (PLS) and KSTAR’s superconducting fusion research equipment. As Dr. Kwan has a lot of experience with organizational management as the head of several research institutes, he is thought to have sufficient expertise in internal and external communications.

It is expected that Dr. Kwon will successfully lead the construction of the IBS heavy ion accelerator (RAON) by drawing upon his expertise in accelerators and rich experience in managing large-scale projects.
