Institute for Basic Science 2nd Headquarter Building Groundbreaking Ceremony HeldThe groundbreaking ceremony for the 2nd headquarter building of the Institute for Basic Science (IBS), was held on May 17th. About 200 influential figures in science and technology attended the groundbreaking ceremony, including First Vice Minister OH Tae-Seok of the Ministry of Science and ICT, National Assembly member CHO Seung-Rae, Mayor of Daejeon LEE Taek-Gu, and Daedeok R&D Special Zone Association Director KIM Jang-Seong. The 1st IBS headquarter building was completed in 2017, and the 2nd building is estimated to be completed on May 2025. The 2nd building will have a total floor space of 38,853㎡ (research 35,122㎡, residential 3,731㎡), consist of 1 below-ground and 5~8 above-ground floors with 2 sections, and will cost 123.2 billion KRW. The 2nd quarter building will house 7 Research Centers in the future, as more Centers become established. Most of the area will consist of laboratory spaces, but some will be set aside for common use such as conference halls, meeting rooms, and seminar rooms. IBS was established in 2011, and it is currently operating 33 Research Centers and 4 Research Institutes. The Center saw a large rise in its Nature Index Ranking in 2022. It is currently ranked 17th in the world among national research institutes and 1st in South Korea.
