Recruitment Announcement for the Directorships
The Institute for Basic Science (IBS) was established by the Korean government in November 2011 in order to become a world-class research institute in the basic sciences. IBS accordingly invites applications for directorial positions that have become available at a number of research centers.
These centers will foster growth in world-class basic sciences, which will serve to advance knowledge and lay the foundations for emerging technologies.

1. Research Areas
l Top-tier, world-class research into the basic sciences will focus on large-scale, long-term group programs that are currently unavailable at universities or government-supported institutes in Korea.

2. Requirements
l All candidates must have world-class research credentials, or must be able to demonstrate potential to achieve forefront research in the future.
l All candidates must be able to commit themselves completely in the long-term to IBS research activities.
l All candidates must be able to direct and manage their respective research groups.
3. What We Offer
l Directors will be given autonomy in hiring staff, organizing their teams, and conducting their research programs.
l Directors will be offered a tenured position at the IBS, or a permanent professorship or a permanent position at a partner institute.
l Directors' annual salaries will be negotiated with the president of the IBS, and become effective upon signing of the contracts.
4. Regulations
l Directors are required to work full-time in their research centers. Members of research centers are generally expected to conduct research at their research centers.
l On publications written under the name(s) of researchers who have participated in IBS research-center programs, the IBS should be cited as the primary affiliation.
l Evaluations of research achievements will take place every three years, the results of which will determine the scale of next operating budget of the research center. The first evaluation will take place after five years since the research center is established.
5. Type of Research Center
l There are three types of Research Centers : ① Headquarters ② Campus ③ Extramural Centers
- In principle, applicants in “Mathematics or Theoretical Physics” and “Specialized On-campus Research Areas” must apply for the headquarters and the relevant campus research centers, respectively.
6. Organizational Structure of Research Center
l Research Centers may be organized by several research groups under Directors and/or Associate Directors at the same location. The organizational structure of Research Centers can be classified into ① One-Director System (Director + Associate Director(s)) ② Multi-director System (2 or more Co-directors) ③ Combined System (Co-directors + Associate Director(s)).

7. Budget
l An appropriate amount of budget, including research expenses, overheads, and salaries, will be allocated to the Research Center according to its research plan. For detailed information, refer to Application Form for IBS Directors (Attachment 1) and FAQ (Attachment 3).
- The start-up investment budget for the initial establishment of the research center will be evaluated, separately, for which applicant must propose the appropriate amount of start-up budget with the list of equipment, large-scale facilities, etc.
※ The appropriateness of budget shall be considered during the evaluation process for directors.
8. Application Type
l Select one between 「Organizing New Research Center」 and 「Participating in Previously Established Research Center」
l In case of 「Organizing New Research Center」, applicant must select both the type* and the organizational structure**, and propose the appropriate size of research center’s budget.

** ① One-Director System (Director + Associate Director(s)) ② Multi-director System (2 or more Co-directors) ③ Combined System (Co-directors + Associate Director(s))
- In principle, applicants in Mathematics and Theoretical Physics must apply for co-directorship at the headquarters, in which the size of the research center’s budget shall be decided by the President.
l In case of 「Participating in Previously Established Research Center」as a co-director, applicant must submit a written consent (Attachment 2) from the corresponding Managing Director.
※ A written consent (Letter of Agreement) is not required for applicants in Mathematics and Theoretical Physics at the headquarters.
