– 2023 여름 인턴 학부생 from Cornell U

Undergraduate Research Interns

We are seeking undergraduate intern applicants to research with us. This program is recommended for students who:

1. Students who want to experience research experience before entering graduate school

2. Students who want to apply mathematics, statistics, and physical theories to biomedical science problems

Depending on the biomedical mathematics background, it is divided into 1) individual research, 2) supportive research, and 3) participating in research after studying the Journal Club course. For the case of 1) and 2), monthly financial support will be provided. I strongly recommend the KAI-X intern program for those who come from outside of Korea.

Excellent research results lead to the publication of articles. For example, previous undergraduate research works have been published in top journals as follows, and studies conducted through URP received the KAIST URP Grand Prize in 2021 and 2022.

  1. Personalized sleep-wake patterns aligned with circadian rhythm relieve daytime sleepiness, iScience (2020)
  2. Validation of a Korean version of the Metacognitions Questionnaire-Insomnia (MCQ-I) and development of shortened versions of the rating scale: a random forest approach, Sleep Medicine (2022)
  3. A general model-based causal inference overcomes the curse of synchrony and indirect effect. Nature Communication (2023)
  4. A machine learning based simple questionnaires predicting the risk of sleep disorders, JMIR (2023)

You can find potential research topic via 2023-4 Winter Intern’s presentation.

Research topics that IBS is conducting can be confirmed through published papers. Below is the description of the undergraduate internship of previous undergraduate students.

“Participating as an intern at the IBS Biomedical mathematics group is one of the most prestigious research experiences an undergraduate student can have. My experience with the Biomedical mathematics group was an invaluable experience that will be a strong foundation for my future research career.

One of the merits of this internship is that it allows undergraduates to get hands-on experience in research projects. In many labs, undergraduate students often participate in research projects in limited ways. They often simply “assist” graduate students or post-docs in performing their own research, completing simple-minded and trivial tasks that do not require much scientific reasoning. However, at IBS Biomedical mathematics group, undergraduate students get to contribute to research projects more holistically. Students can work with mentors to design their study topic, perform the research, and practice science communication skills by writing the manuscript. Mentors and professor are easily accessible and supportive, and a weekly meeting with them is a chance to develop new scientific insights. With this holistic experience, undergraduates can experience the life of a graduate student before even entering graduate school.

Another merit of the internship is participation in various seminars and conferences. Participating in the journal club is an effective way to learn about different biological and mathematical studies by other researchers. The group hosts online colloquiums and seminars that bring in world-renowned researchers. Participating in these talks is an opportunity to learn how top researchers tackle different problems. Furthermore, the group offers chances to attend various conferences and build connections with other researchers worldwide. Presenting at these conferences is a great chance not only to get feedback on research but also to practice presentation skills.

My time with the IBS Biomedical mathematics group was an invaluable experience that inspired me to pursue a professional career as a research scientist. The experience with the Biomedical mathematics group will be foundational for my future research career, and I strongly recommend prospective applicants to take advantage of this wonderful opportunity.” An undergrad intern from U of Michigan, Ann Arbor.

“Having attended high school and college in the United States, I was very worried about whether a research lab in Korea would be a good fit for me, and I was also worried about whether I would be well-suited as a researcher with a major in biomathematics with a focus on data science. Therefore, I had a lot of thoughts and anxiety before entering the lab. However, once I actually entered the lab, I found that the foreign researchers and other graduate students and PhDs were very welcoming and supportive of my different experiences and backgrounds. This diversity provided me with new perspectives and approaches to the research process, and contributed greatly to improving the team’s collaboration and the quality of the research.

Above all, my professors and my mentor have always been relentless in their support, and thanks to their guidance and advice, I have grown academically, and these opportunities have allowed me to improve my thesis writing skills in ways I could never have imagined at the undergraduate level. If I had not joined the lab, I doubt that I would have been able to experience this kind of research and develop the ability to write a thesis as an undergraduate student. My experience in the lab has inspired me to pursue graduate school and my dream of becoming a researcher. After my experience in the lab during the school holidays, I have a dream to go to graduate school in bioinformatics and do more research.

The experience in this lab will be a great starting point for my future career and success, and if you join the lab, the research activities in Korea will give you the opportunity to connect with the international research community, which will enhance your academic development and networking.” An undergrad intern from Cornell U
