POSTECH 수학과 김진영
2022 겨울 IBS 인턴쉽을 진행하면서 개인적으로나 연구적으로 많은 것을 느끼게 되어 이 글을 작성하게 되었습니다. 인턴쉽을 통해서 많은 것을 배우게 되었는데 그 중에 하나가 스스로 하루를 돌아보고 작성하는 Daily report 입니다. 연구를 진행하다가 목표를 잃어버릴 때가 많았습니다. 하지만 daily report를 통해서 하루를 시작하며 오늘의 방향을 보고, 마무리하며 성과를 작성, 더 나아가 내일 제가 가야할 길을 볼 수 있게 되었습니다. 다음으로 연구적으로 느낀 것은 다양한 연구자들과 함께 생활하며 자연스럽게 토론, 저의 연구를 소개할 기회를 얻을 수 있었습니다. 이를 통해 수학적인 관점의 다양성과 연구의 부족한 점 또는 제가 미쳐 보지 못한 보완할 부분을 알 수 있었습니다. 특히, “Distribution of stopping time 문제로 어려움을 겪고 있었는데 다른 학생들과 디스커션 하면서 Diffusion of Brownian motion 아이디어를 얻어서 연구의 실마리를 얻을 수 있었습니다. ” 한달이라는 짧은 기간의 인턴쉽이지만, 포항공대 학교로 돌아와서도 다시가고 싶을 만큼 좋은 경험이라고 생각합니다.

인턴 기간동안 다른 학교, 다른 연구실 학생들을 만나면서 각자의 연구실에서 어떻게, 무엇을 공부하는지 공유하고 배울 수 있었습니다. Daily Plan과 Daily Progress를 하면서 매일 아침 하루동안 공부할 내용을 계획하고, 하루의 마지막에 오늘 했던 일을 정리하며 다음날을 계획하는 습관을 기를 수 있었습니다. 또 매주 있던 세미나와 journal club의 발표를 들으면서 다양한 분야의 수준 높은 발표를 경험해 볼 수 있었고, 좋은 발표란 무엇인가 생각해 볼 수 있었습니다.

IBS에서 4주라는 시간이 힘들었지만 그만큼 보람찼습니다. 무슨 일이 있어도 꾸준한 출근 시간, 하루의 계획과 달성도 체크 등 연구자로서의 루틴을 다시 만드는 시간을 가질 수 있었습니다. 그리고 무엇보다 높은 수준의 세미나와 강연들은 인상적이었고 학습에 대한 동기부여를 주었습니다. 또한, 새로운 학생들과의 교류도 매우 긍정적이었습니다.

IBS 인턴 경험은 좋은 환경에서 다양한 분들과 교류하며 많이 배울 수 있는 기회였습니다. 먼저, 세미나와 저널클럽을 통해서 쉬운 언어로 개념을 설명하고 지식을 설명하는 것을 보고 배울 수 있었습니다. 서로 의문을 제시하고 토의하며 단순한 지식을 배우는게 아니라 연구하는 과정에 대해서 알아 볼 수 있었습니다. 그리고 학교 밖에 연구자들과 소통하면서 다른 연구 주제, 방법론에 대해서도 접할 수 있어서 즐거운 시간이었습니다. 마지막으로 연구실과 기숙사를 비롯해서 좋은 환경을 제공해주셔서 인턴동안 잘 지낼 수 있었습니다

IBS 인턴 경험을 통해 우물 안 개구리였던 저에게 우물 밖의 모습을 체험하고 교류할 수 있었던 기회였습니다. 우선, 다양한 주제의 연구를 하시는 분들과 서로 연구에 관해 소개하고 저널클럽이라는 시간을 통해 다른 연구주제, 방법, 관점에 대해 공유하여 연구자로써 가져야하는 의사소통에 대해 생각해 볼 수 있었습니다. 또한 서로의 연구 주제들을 묶어 공동 연구로 가는 방식들에 대해 직, 간접 체험해 보며 공동 연구에 대해 체험도 해보았습니다. 마지막으로 외부의 좋은 강연자들의 세미나를 통해 연구에서 새로운 관점을 얻을 수 있는 좋은 기회였습니다. 앞으로 연구자가 되었을 때 가져야하는 중요한 덕목들을 깨우치고 체험할 수 있었던 뜻있는 시간들 이었습니다.

안녕하세요. 지난 IBS 인턴쉽에 참여하였던 부산대 박사과정 김미지입니다. 처음 인턴을 하기로 했을 때 타지 생활을 해본적도 없었고 어떤 연구를 해야할지에 대한 주제도 정해져 있지 않아 걱정반 근심반으로 IBS 에 창여하게되었습니다. 먼저, 회화에 대한 어려움이 많았었는데 IBS에 외국인 연구자 분들이 많이 계셔서 회화에도 많은 자극을 받고 연구에 대한 대화를 통해서 저의 시야를 한층더 넓게 만들어주었습니다. 두번 째, 매일 daily plan이랑 daily progress를 작성하며. 무의미하게 지나가는 하루하루가 아니라 IBS에서는 하루를 살아도 의미있게 연구하고 허투루 보내지 않게 되었습니다. 마지막으로, 서로서로 연구에 대해 많은 대화를 나누는 모습과 저널클럽을 통해 연구에 대한 흥미를 얻었고 교류를 통해 공동연구에 대해서도 체험 해볼수 있었습니다.
IBS 분들에게는 무엇보다 자신의 연구에 대한 자신감과 발표하는 실력을 보며 많은 깨달음을 얻고 왔습니다. IBS 인턴쉽을 하면서 겼은 크고 작은 경험과 추억들은 앞으로 연구자의 삶속에서 좋은 밑거름이 되어서 큰 도움이 될것이라 생각합니다.

During your internship,
1. You can learn the latest methodology in the field of biomedical mathematics while participating in the biomedical mathematics seminar and journal club that are held continuously. 2. You can develop your research by discussing with top international scientists who visit the IBS Biomedical Mathematics Group in the summer. 3. You can learn how top researchers conduct research and live together.
You will receive free accommodation during your internship. If you participate in research in IBS, a stipend will be provided. You can explore potential research topics at a presentation of the work of the winter 2023-4 interns.

Jin Young Kim, Department of Mathematics, POSTECH
I am writing this article because I have learnt a lot of things during my IBS internship in winter 2022, both personally and research-wise. One of the things I have learnt through the internship is the daily report, which is a self-review of my day. In my research, I often lose track of my goals, but the daily report helped me to see the direction of my day at the beginning of the day, write my achievements at the end of the day, and see where I need to go tomorrow. The next thing I felt in terms of research was living with various researchers, which gave me the opportunity to naturally discuss and introduce my research. Through this, I was able to learn about the diversity of mathematical perspectives and the lack of research or the areas to be improved that I hadn’t realised. In particular, I was struggling with the problem of “Distribution of stopping time”, but through discussions with other students, I got the idea of Diffusion of Brownian motion, which gave me a clue for my research.” Although it was a short internship of one month, I think it was a good experience that I would like to do again when I return to POSTECH.

During the internship, I was able to meet students from other schools and other labs and share and learn how and what they study in their labs. By doing Daily Plan and Daily Progress, I was able to develop the habit of planning what I will study for the day every morning, and at the end of the day, I summarise what I did today and plan for the next day. Also, by listening to the weekly seminar and journal club presentations, I was able to experience high-quality presentations in various fields and think about what a good presentation is.

My four weeks at IBS were challenging but rewarding. I had time to reestablish my routine as a researcher, such as coming to work no matter what, planning my day, and checking my achievements. The high quality of the seminars and lectures was impressive and motivating, and the interaction with new students was very positive.

My experience as an intern at IBS was an opportunity to learn a lot by interacting with various people in a good environment. Firstly, through seminars and journal clubs, I was able to learn by watching them explain concepts and knowledge in simple language. I also enjoyed the opportunity to interact with researchers outside of the school and learn about different research topics and methodologies. It was fun to interact with researchers outside of the school and learn about different research topics and methodologies. Finally, the lab and dormitory provided me with a good environment, so I was able to stay well during my internship.

The IBS internship experience was an opportunity for me to experience and interact with people outside the well. First of all, I was able to introduce my research to people who are doing research on various topics and share about different research topics, methods, and perspectives through the journal club, which made me think about the communication that I should have as a researcher. I also experienced collaborative research through direct and indirect experiences on how to tie up each other’s research topics and lead to collaborative research. Finally, it was a great opportunity to gain new perspectives on research through seminars by good lecturers from outside. It was a meaningful time to realise and experience important virtues that I should have when I become a researcher.

hello. I am Miji Kim, a PhD student at Pusan National University who participated in the last IBS internship. When I first decided to do an internship, I had never been out of the country before and had no idea what kind of research I wanted to do, so I joined the IBS as a worried and anxious student. First, I had a lot of difficulties with conversation, but there were many foreign researchers at IBS, so I was stimulated by the conversation and broadened my horizons through conversations about research. Second, I wrote a daily plan and daily progress every day. I learned to make each day meaningful and not just pass by meaninglessly. Lastly, I gained interest in research through the journal club and the many conversations we had with each other about research, and I was able to experience collaborative research through exchanges.
Most of all, I have learnt a lot from the IBS students by seeing their confidence in their research and their presentation skills. I think that the big and small experiences and memories I had during the IBS internship will be a good foundation for my future life as a researcher.
