CI Prof. Jae Kyoung Kim’s Project Selected for Samsung Future Technology Development Program. CI

Prof. Jae Kyoung Kim’s research project has been selected for the Samsung Future Technology Development Program in the second half of 2026. Accordingly, he will conduct research on “Development of a Digital Health Foundation Technology for Longitudinal Reconstruction of Physiological States and Multi-disease Trajectory Prediction Based on Mathematical Modeling,” with funding support from the Samsung Future Technology Foundation.

The Samsung Future Technology Foundation identifies and supports creative and challenging research projects that will lead future advanced science and technology, through two selection rounds each year. In this round, a total of 15 projects were newly selected, including 10 in the ICT field and 5 in basic science, with Prof. Kim’s project included in the ICT category.

Prof. Kim has previously conducted a mathematics-focused project supported by the Foundation until 2024, and this marks his second selection. In particular, this selection is notable as it represents an expansion from mathematics-centered research into the ICT domain.

This research aims to develop technologies that quantitatively reconstruct individual physiological states using various biometric data—such as heart rate, sleep, and activity—collected from wearable devices like smartwatches, and to predict the onset and progression trajectories of multiple diseases. By interpreting continuously accumulated real-world data through mathematical modeling and artificial intelligence, the study seeks to propose a new paradigm in digital health that enables early detection of disease signals.

In particular, this research goes beyond purely data-driven prediction by adopting an approach that jointly infers physiological states and the underlying mechanisms of disease progression using mathematical models. This is expected to address the limitations of conventional black-box AI approaches and contribute to the development of next-generation technologies for personalized disease prediction and long-term health management.

Prof. Kim stated, “Integrating mathematical modeling with artificial intelligence to understand and predict human health states from real-world data is both a highly challenging and critically important research direction,” adding, “We hope that this research will ultimately evolve into a technology that can be widely used in everyday life around the world, contributing to disease prevention and improvements in quality of life.”
