Made up of the most eminent scientists who meet the top international evaluation standards* for scientific excellence
50 research centers will be established by 2017.
* Separate review panels will be organized to conduct a comprehensive evaluation of each candidate.
Strategic Composition and Flexible Operation
HQ research centers will increase and constitute a larger part of the composition of IBS research centers to bring operational stability to IBS
Allow operational flexibility by selecting small-sized research centers in addition to the already existing large-scale research centers
Efficient Operation
Current group leaders will temporarily maintain their position and they are now subject to more reinforced evaluation and selection process. In the meantime, a phased operational transition will take place to ease the shift to the associate-director and/or co-director systems.
Directors will decide how to run such new systems depending on the field of research and characteristics of the research centers.
Opportunities for Long-term, Group Research
Scientists who have led any Creative Programs commissioned by the National Research Foundation (NRF) of Korea, or who have demonstrated the equivalent potential will be recruited as directors (including co-directors) and associate directors, and they will be granted opportunities for long-term, group research.
Collaboration with World-renowned Scientists & Training for Promising Scientists
Attract world-renowned scientists under the initiative to recruit 300 of the world’s top 1% scientists (including scientists who won major awards in science and technology or who published highly cited papers -top 1% citation)
