Selection and Evaluation Committee (SEC)

Roles and Functions

  • To evaluate candidates for IBS research center Directors
  • To evaluate candidates for IBS Associate Directors
  • To evaluate the performance of IBS research centers
  • To implement other matters that the IBS president deems necessary with regard to the selection and evaluation of Centers.

Compositions

  • The SEC is comprised of approximately 20 Korean and non-Korean scholars.
  • SEC members are appointed by the President of IBS for a three-year term, which can be extended upon completion.
  • In the case where an IBS Director is appointed as a SEC member, he/she will serve a two-year term (extension not allowed).

  • Prof. George A. Sawatzky (Professor, University of British Columbia)

Subcommittees

  • The five subcommittees of the SEC are:
    • Mathematics
    • Physics
    • Earth Science
    • Chemistry (including nano-science)
    • Life science (including basic medical science)

Meetings

  • SEC meetings usually take place twice a year in April and August.
  • Main agenda
    • Selection of director candidates for in-depth evaluation
    • Selection of final director candidates
    • Comprehensive evaluation of associate director candidates
