Professor Jin-Soo Kim, director of the Center for Genome Engineering will receive the award on December 10 at the 2015 Science Journalist Night hosted by the Korea Science Journalists Association. The association said that the journalists voted for the Professor in recognition of his achievement in developing a new genome editing techonology. Last November, he succeeded in genetically modifying plants using CRISPR-CAS9 without the addition of DNA—a tremendous achievement as these plants are exempt from current GMO regulations.

Professor Kim is a pioneer in genome editing and has published a number of related papers in world-renowned journals. At the 2015 World Conference of Science Journalists (WCSJ) in June the Professor held a session titled “CRISPR-Cas9 Genome Editing in Medicine and Biotechnology”. He also recently presented a promising treatment for hemophilia using CRISPR-Cas 9, which has opened a new chapter in genome editing applications.

Science Journalist Night is an event for science and medical journalists to celebrate the year-end and network with each other. The 2015 WCSJ organizing committee will officially disband at this year’s event and IBS will be awarded a plaque of appreciation for its role in successfully hosting the conference.
