We previously showed that subjective sleepiness maps linearly, with a protocol-invariant form, onto the signed distance\u00a0<em>H \u2212 H<\/em><sup>+<\/sup>\u00a0between the homeostatic pressure\u00a0<em>H<\/em>\u00a0and the circadian-modulated sleep-onset threshold\u00a0<em>H<\/em><sup>+<\/sup>. This single quantity predicts sleepiness accurately but is mechanistically ambiguous: the same value can arise either because\u00a0<em>H<\/em>\u00a0sits far from the boundary or because the threshold\u00a0<em>H<\/em><sup>+<\/sup>(<em>t<\/em>) has shifted with circadian phase, and these two origins call for entirely different interpretations and interventions. Here we resolve this ambiguity by decomposing\u00a0<em>H \u2212 H<\/em><sup>+<\/sup>\u00a0into two mechanistically separable axes\u2013<em>intensity<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0<em>phase<\/em>. The\u00a0<em>intensity<\/em>\u00a0axis is the time-averaged margin \u27e8\u00a0<em>H \u2212 H<\/em><sup>+<\/sup>\u27e9, set by how far, on average,\u00a0<em>H<\/em>\u00a0sits from the sleep boundary: slowed homeostatic accumulation accounts for the paradoxically blunted sleepiness of older adults, and pharmacological suppression of\u00a0<em>H<\/em>\u00a0accounts for the dose-dependent alerting effect of caffeine. The\u00a0<em>phase<\/em>\u00a0axis is set by the circadian modulation of\u00a0<em>H<\/em><sup>+<\/sup>(<em>t<\/em>): under a forced-desynchrony protocol, in which the pacemaker free-runs and the homeostatic and circadian processes are experimentally decoupled, sleepiness tracks the circadian profile of\u00a0<em>H<\/em><sup>+<\/sup>(<em>t<\/em>) across all phases while the intensity mapping itself remains unchanged\u2013a clean dissociation of the two axes.
