They say eyes are the window of the mind. We can understand a person’s emotions and thoughts by looking into each other’s eyes. This video clip is composed of confocal reflectance images of the eyes of zebrafish, which is a widely used animal model at our Center. The pattern of light reflected from the zebrafish’s cornea, lens, and vitreous chamber looks like stars and a nebula in the Universe. Their eyes are less than 1 cm in size yet contain an immense, light year-scale of the Universe. Maybe the zebrafish are using their eyes to tell us they are also precious creatures, just like humans, and are part of the Earth and the Universe.

흔히 눈은 마음을 비추는 거울이라고 한다. 자신의 감정이 눈빛에 비춰지기 때문이다. 우리는 서로의 생각과 감정에 공감하기 위해 눈을 맞추며 대화한다. 눈을 더 자세히 들여다보게 되면 비밀 없이 모든 것을 알 수 있게 될까. 이 작품은 제브라피시의 눈에 공초점주사현미경으로 빛을 쪼인 뒤 반사된 빛을 찍은 동영상이다. IBS 분자 분광학 및 동력학 연구단은 새로운 현미경을 개발하는 연구 과정에서 제브라피시를 모델 동물로 사용하곤 한다. 제브라피시의 각막과 수정체, 유리체에서 반사된 빛의 패턴이 마치 우주 공간에 빛나는 별들과 성운을 보는 것 같다. 1cm도 안 되는 작은 물고기의 눈에 광년(light year) 단위로 크기를 논하는 어마어마한 우주가 담겨 있다. 그리고 별이 된 물고기는 새로운 현미경을 개발하는 과학자들의 연구 과정에 이정표를 제시한다. 어쩌면 제브라피시는 눈을 통해 그들이 우리 인간과 다름없는 지구상의 존귀한 생명체이며, 우주의 한 구성원임을 말해주는 것이 아닐까.
