Abstract:

The argument has been put forward in a Nobel-prize lecture that wavefunctions for systems with

more than 10^2-10^3 electrons are not a legitimate scientific concept. If this would be the case, 

electronic structure calculations based on many-body wavefunctions, e.g., for solids would not 

make sense. It will be shown that this is fortunately not the case. The above argument is scrutinized 

and some results for selected properties of solids are presented.
