Call for Applications for Associate Director Positions of "Center for Plant Aging Research" in the Institute for Basic Science (IBS)

IBS invites applications for a position of Associate Director at the senior investigator level with a high research potential, who will run a high impact research program in collaboration with the director and associate director at the Center for Plant Aging Research.

1. Introduction of the research center

  • - The overall goal of Center for Plant Aging Research is to gain insights into systems level understanding of senescence and cell-death from the perspective of a life-history strategy at molecular, cellular, intercellular, organ and organismal levels by taking systems approaches including genomics, proteomics and computational biology coupled with phenome, molecular imaging and chemical genetics.
  • - The center is establishing core technology units in cooperation with DGIST, focusing on the computational unit, super-resolution and sensitive imaging unit, chemical genetics unit, systems genetics unit, and phenome unit. All the core technology units will be world-class and world-leading operations.

2. Job description

  • - The Center seeks an outstanding plant cell biologist with research interests in the area of cell and molecular biology, cellular signaling, genetics and epigenetics to investigate plant and environment interaction governing plant development and senescence at the organismal, cellular and molecular levels. The individual who fills this position will be expected to establish an exciting, high-impact research program, using cell type-specific genomics, genetics and epigenetics, which facilitates plant aging and senescence research and helps to achieve the goal of the Center.
  • - The individual will be expected to conduct the following research: 1) Establishment of a cellular model system that can facilitate genetic/epigenetic analyses of cellular networks governing plant growth and senescence programs and their interaction with environment, 2) visualization of cellular activities during cell differentiation, growth and senescence by identifying core signaling molecules and network as well as modulation by environment at the cellular level, 3) near-complete understanding of ROS and calcium-mediated signaling networks that control developmental and senescence processes as well as adaptation to long-term environmental changes, 4) investigation of non-coding RNA-mediated epigenetic regulation of plant development and senescence at the cellular level, and 5) identification and functional characterization of cell type-specific non-coding regulatory RNAs in stem cell maintenance and differentiation. We expect the successful candidate to develop and establish an active research group, be an interactive member of the Center and participate in interdisciplinary, collaborative research and training.

3. Requirements for the position (including the specific requirements set by the host institution or the research center)

  • - Candidates should have a Ph. D., postdoctoral experience, a record of excellence in research, and a minimum of 10 years of experience as a PI at academia.
  • - The successful candidate should commit himself/herself completely to IBS research activities.
  • - The successful candidate should be able to manage his/her respective research group.
  • - The successful candidate should be able to work closely with the director and other groups at the Center and conduct various collaborative research within the Center as well as with other IBS research centers.

4. Offer

  • - Research budget of approximately up to USD 1.5M per year. This includes usual facility operation, research, and technology development. Additional funding for the facility may be provided, when necessary.
  • - Annual salary in the range of USD 150,000 – 200,000.
  • - Rent-free apartment housing; exclusive of utility bills.
  • - Medical insurance (A half is paid by the Institute).
  • - IBS is a governmental institute and the employee is expected to follow the rules of the Korean government.
  • - She/he will be at the same time employed as either tenure-track or tenured faculty in the Department of New Biology at DGIST, Republic of Korea. DGIST is a newly established research university supported by the Korean government and aims to be a world-premiere university in convergence science and technology.

5. General Selection Procedure

  • ① Recruitment of applicants by public advertisement
  • ② Selection of candidates for in-depth evaluation
  • ③ Symposium and in-depth interview by review panel
  • ④ Decision by the SEC (Selection & Evaluation Committee) about recommendation
  • ⑤ Negotiation with director
