IBS Young Scientist (YS)
and IBS Senior Scientist (SS) Program in 2015

1. Introduction

  • - IBS YS and IBS SS programs serve as a breeding ground for the next generation of leaders in basic-science research.
  • - IBS YSs and IBS SSs conduct collaborative research with outstanding IBS researchers in an open and autonomous research environment.

2. Areas of Research

  • - The IBS YS and SS programs are recruiting candidates for the following research centers:
  • - IBS YS Program: refer to www.ibs.re.kr/en/ibsys
  • - IBS SS Program: refer to www.ibs.re.kr/en/ibsss
        ※ Candidates may only apply for one research center in the desired research area.

3. Qualifications

  • - All applicants should be interested in research that synergizes with their IBS center’s research mission and/or could lead to new avenues of research.
  • - All applicants should be interested in undertaking novel and innovative research.
  • - Applicants for the IBS YS program should have no more than 5 years’ experience after obtaining their Ph. D.
  • - Applicants for the IBS SS program should have more than 5 years’ experience after obtaining their Ph. D.
  • - Applicants who are affiliated with other institutions must take a leave of absence while working at IBS.
  • - IBS research fellows and researchers hired by IBS Research Center are not eligible to apply.

4. Governance

  • - IBS YSs and SSs are full-time employees of their respective IBS research centers. However, they will be guaranteed independence within the organization and in the operation of small research groups.

5. Support Period & Amount of Funding

  • - IBS YSs will receive support for 3 years initially, which can be extended up to 5 years upon evaluation and IBS SSs will receive support for 2 years initially, which can be extended up to 3 years upon evaluation.
      ※ Further funding will be determined after evaluation: IBS YSs will be evaluated in their third year and IBS SSs will be evaluated in their second year. The results of these evaluations may be taken into account when IBS YSs and IBS SSs apply for permanent IBS research positions.
  • - Successful IBS YS candidates will receive annual research funding of up to KRW300 million* and Successful IBS SS candidates will receive up to KRW500 million*.
      * Labor costs are included in the research funding.

6. Organization of Research Group

  • - IBS YSs and SSs organize research groups independently within the funded research budget.
  • - Research groups are comprised of research fellows, researchers, and graduate students (and, if necessary, administrative/engineering staff.)

7. Employment Status & Work Level

  • - IBS YSs and IBS SSs are non-tenure-track research fellows of IBS.
      ※ IBS YSs and IBS SSs are required to work full-time at the IBS Research Center.

8. Selection Process

  • - Candidates will be recruited via an open invitation and reviewed by evaluation committees.

9. Schedule for 2015

  • - Applications deadline: August 14
  • - Evaluation period: August 15 ~ October 30
  • - Negotiation period: November ~
      ※ The IBS may change the schedule if necessary. IBS YS may alter the start date of research projects upon agreement of the IBS.
