In 1984, right at the peak of the Cold War, the Soviet Union's submarine Red October leaves port. Its new drive renders movement under the waves almost silent. The sub's captain, Ramius, tries to defect and bring it along with him. The Soviet navy mobilizes itself to sink Red October while American intelligence tracks this nuclear missile sub which seems to be heading to an American coast. CIA analyst Ryan exactly saw Ramius' intention and goes out of his way to bring Ramius safely to American soil.
