IBS to Host “IBS Conferences” Starting in 2016

The Institute for Basic Science (IBS) will host eight international conferences in the field of basic science this year under the title IBS Conferences beginning with IBS Conference on Supramolecular Chemistry which will held over July 15~16 at POSCO International Center in Pohang.

As part of the “IBS Initiative” highlighting the Institute’s future strategies to increase opportunities for young talents, build global leadership, and strengthen Institute identity, IBS Conferences is newly introduced to facilitate the Institute’s role as a global leader in basic science research. World-renowned scientists will be invited to partake in IBS Conferences and promote active discussions and exchange ideas on various fields of basic science as well as to explore topics for research collaboration. Particular emphasis will be placed on allowing young scientists to learn and gain firsthand insights from interacting with distinguished scholars.

Three of the IBS Conferences will be hosted solely by IBS research centers on topics of supramolecular chemistry, surface atomic wires, and nano-bio interface science. Other conferences will be held jointly with domestic or international research institutions on topics as varied as neuroscience, aging research, immunology, vascular biology, material physics, and rare isotope physics. In particular, joint conferences with world leading institutions such as Max Planck Institutes and RIKEN will be hosted as part of the Commemorative Event for the 5th Anniversary of IBS in November.

As the first event, IBS Conference on Supramolecular Chemistry will be hosted by the IBS Center for Self-assembly and Complexity (Director KIM Kimoon) with around 10 invited speakers who are experts in this field. In particular, Professor Jonathan Nitschke of the University of Cambridge and Professor Ivan Aprahamian of Dartmouth College, who are recipients of Cram Lehn Pedersen Prize1) in 2012 and 2016 respectively, will give a talk at the conference.

The IBS president, Professor KIM Doochul, emphasized the significance of IBS Conferences by stating, “I’m pleased that IBS can actively interact and strengthen collaboration with domestic and international scientific communities by hosting IBS Conferences. I hope that IBS Conferences will become one of the most prestigious international academic events in the field of basic science in Korea and contribute significantly to the development of IBS as a world leading research institute.”

1) The Cram Lehn Pedersen Prize, named in honor of the winners of the 1987 Nobel Prize in Chemistry, recognizes significant, original and independent work in the area of supramolecular chemistry.
