Won-Jong Kim of IBS given “Mid-Career Researcher Academy Award”

- 2015 Fall Meeting of the Polymer Society of Korea -

The Institute for Basic Science (IBS) said that Won-Jong Kim, group leader of the IBS Center for Self-assembly and Complexity and professor at Pohang University of Science and Technology (POSTECH), won the Mid-Career Researcher Academy Award at the 2015 fall meeting of the Polymer Society of Korea. The society recognizes a mid-career researcher with the award who has shown outstanding performance in polymer studies and contributed to advancing polymer science and engineering in Korea. This year’s fall meeting took place on October 7 at the EXCO, Daegu, Korea.

Dr. Kim conducted research on drug, gene and nitric oxide delivery systems and DNA diagnosis using various biopolymers. He developed a smart drug delivery system which can respond to pH, temperature, light, enzymes and other stimuli inside and outside of cells. This system can be applied to treatment for cancer, heart and eye diseases.

He has published nearly 60 papers since 2007 and approximately 100 throughout his research career. His research has led to about 30 patents granted in Korea and abroad and is expected to further facilitate technology transfer and commercialization in relevant fields.
