2015 IBS Symposium Beginning on July 2nd
- Distinguished scholars from the
scientific fields of Mathematics, Physics and Earth Science will present in
Seoul -

The
Institute for Basic Science (IBS) is launching its 2015 edition of the Symposium
on three separate research areas from July 2nd to 15th.
The Symposium provides a
unique stage for leading scholars in basic science to share their research
outcomes and the latest trends in basic science research. IBS will also seek to
use this opportunity to take advantage of having the world’s leading scientific
brains in one place to recruit IBS directors to advance IBS as a global hub for
science research.
This year’s Symposium will explore
three separate research areas, all to be held on different days and in
different venues. The Symposium begins on July 2nd where the field of Mathematics
will take center stage at Seoul National University. On July 13th, Physics will
be introduced and discussed at Yonsei University. The Symposium will conclude
on July 15th at The Palace Hotel Seoul where current thoughts on Earth Science
will be exchanged. Prominent researchers in each research area will serve as
the chair and 21 domestic and foreign experts will lend their knowledge to the
event.
The
Symposium in Mathematics will be held at 2 p.m., Thursday, July 2 at the Mok-am
Hall (Building No. 501), College of Natural Sciences, Seoul National
University.
Kim Dohan, a professor at
the Department of Mathematical Sciences, Seoul National University, will serve
as the chair, and five speakers including Yu Shih-Hsien, a professor at
National University of Singapore, will present on “Partial Differential
Equations”.
The
Symposium in Physics will be held at 10 a.m., Monday, July 13 at Chang Ki-Won
International Conference Hall, Yonsei-Samsung Library, Yonsei University.
Harvard University Professor
Kim Philip, a pioneer in graphene research, will serve as the chair, and six
speakers including Jeremy Levy, a distinguished professor at University of
Pittsburgh, will present on “Imaging and Manipulation of Emergent Phenomena in
Nanostructures”.
The
Symposium in Earth Science will be held under the overarching theme of “Challenges
in Earth Science” at 9 a.m., Wednesday, July 15 at the Grand Ballroom, The Palace
Hotel Seoul.
Richard Anthes, the president
emeritus of the University Corporation for Atmospheric Research, will chair the
morning session, and five speakers including Jochem Marotzke, a director at the
Max Planck Institute for Meteorology, will present on “Climate Change”.
Jos Lelieveld, a director at
the Max Planck Institute for Chemistry will chair the afternoon session, and
five speakers including Russel Dickerson, a professor at University of
Maryland, will present on “Atmospheric Chemistry”.
